Event Description

8:45 – 10:15am – Session I: Knowing and Showing Your Value
Measuring and communicating the value of SGR within your organization.

The phrase “adding value” is a commonly used term in government relations practices today. Whether you work in a lobbying firm, corporation or association, every government relations professional is challenged by organizational leaders, internal stakeholders and external partners to add value; but what does that actually mean? What are the criteria for determining when advocacy efforts add value to an organization? What are the metrics of success? In our next Evolution series event, the first session will focus on understanding, shaping and influencing your organization’s public policy goals to create a strong value statement for the GR function that aligns to overall business objectives.  We’ll discuss how best to utilize and leverage resources throughout the year and the evaluation process you should conduct along the way.  Finally, we’ll hear from heads of GR on how to effectively communicate the value your state GR efforts bring to your organization.

Lynne Ross, Consultant, Eckert Seamans and Former Executive Director of the National Association of Attorneys General

10:30 – 12:00pm – Session II: Different Strokes for Different Folks
How and why are there different organizational structures for state and federal government affairs and how do both teams work together?

When it comes to government relations, there are a number of ways the function can be structured.  Some organizations integrate their state and federal teams while others work in silos. During the second session, you will hear from veteran government affairs executives on how their GR functions are structured and why their structures work for them.  We’ll discuss where state and federal efforts overlap, intersect and compete as well as share ideas on how to create synergies between the two teams to achieve overall public policy goals.  Speakers will also provide examples of cautionary tales of what to do, not to do, and tips for achieving the best, and most desired outcomes.
