Description

As a clinician, researcher, business owner, or educator, Microsoft Excel can be used to record, calculate, and organize data.  As music therapists, it is important to show evidence or quantify aspects of our services.  Excel is a great way to make your data look sharp and professional.  See several examples of formulas, graphing tools, and templates that can be helpful to use in your practice and take home free templates.

Learning Objectives

IV A 1: Review data and information relevant to client’s treatment process.
Participants will determine three ways that excel can make reviewing data easier. 

IV A 6: Analyze all available data to determine effectiveness of therapy.
Participants will be able to use three formulas for spreadsheets that will make formulating, analyzing, and retrieving data more efficient 

V B 19: Engage in business management tasks (e.g., budget, contracts, insurance, marketing, payroll, taxes).
Participants will identify ways to use Microsoft Excel in business and research management.  

Schedule

  • 12:00-12:15:  Introductions and course layout
  • 12:15-12:30:  What is excel and how can it be used. 
  • 12:30-12:50:  Examples of how each of the presenters are using excel.  This will include tracking data or research, business management tasks, attendance for sessions, and tracking data for clients. 
  • 12:50-1:05: BREAK
  • 1:05-1:45:  There are formulas for THAT.  Talking about what formulas can be used and for what.  The presenters will go over the common formulas used for music therapy related tasks and help participants understand how to use them. 
  • 1:45-2:00: BREAK
  • 2:00-2:30:  Participants will work on creating their own spreadsheet that would work for them in their practice.  They will be able to ask questions and the presenters will give ideas as needed. 
  • 2:30-3:00: Participants will share some of their spreadsheets and how they plan to use them moving forward.  There will be a final brainstorm of how and why excel can be time efficient and help with accuracy with client information.
