F. Music Therapy Assessment: A Data-Based Decision Making Approach

Description

A Data-Based Decision Making (DBDM) model is a transtheoretical framework for understanding music therapy clinical assessment, one that can be applied across the music therapy treatment process: from referral through treatment termination. Highlights include: the importance of using various sources of clinical evidence when making treatment decisions, the application of DBDM to referral-centered initial assessment, and the use of DBDM as a model in education and clinical training.

3 CMTE-credit course

This course is eligible for LCAT CE Contact Hours (the same number of CMTE credit hours specified above) for continuing education for Licensed Creative Arts Therapists (LCATs) in New York State. AMTA is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed creative arts therapists. #CAT-0055.

Learning Objectives

Learning Objective #1: Participants will identify at least two advantages of using a data-based decision making model with regard to music therapy clinical assessment. (CBMT Domains II.B.1,2,7,13.a-b; and II.C.1-5)

Learning Objective #2: Participants will identify how each assessment method (reviewing, interviewing, observing, and testing) can be applied during prescriptive, formative, and summative assessment. (CBMT Domains II.B.1,2,4.a-m,8-10; II.D.7,10,15; III.B.1; IV.A.1,5,6,8; and IV.B.1-7)

Schedule

Part I: A Data-Based Decision Making Approach to Music Therapy Assessment (50 minutes contact; 10 minutes break)

  • 5 minutes Welcome and introductions
  • 25 minutes Defining a data-based decision making (DBDM) approach to music therapy clinical assessment OBJ#1
  • 15 minutes Applying assessment methods (reviewing, interviewing, observing, and testing) for prescriptive, formative, and summative assessment (breakout groups) OBJ. #2
  • 10 minutes Report out (from breakout groups) OBJ #2
  • 5 minutes Break

PART II: Applying DBDM to Referral and Initial Assessment (50 minutes contact; 10 minutes break)

  • 25 Minutes Description of referral-centered initial assessment OBJ#1 & OBJ#2
  • 25 Minutes Applying referral-centered initial assessment to brief clinical case vignettes (breakout groups) OBJ#2
  • 10 minutes Break

PART III: Closing the Loop on DBDM in Clinical Assessment (50 minutes contact; 10 minutes evaluation)
