Developing and Engaging in Reflective Practice to Advance and Deepen Clinical Skills

Description

Reflective practice fosters engagement in a process of continuous learning. Examining one’s own practice allows a clinician to consciously analyze and evaluate therapeutic and clinical decisions, refocus thinking on existing knowledge, and generate new knowledge. Presenters will share various models of reflective practices and engage participants in experiences to explore reflective practice.

Learner Objectives:

1. Identify three benefits to engaging in reflective practice. II. A.1.d – Provide ongoing acknowledgement and reflection.; II. A.1.f – Recognize and manage aspects of one’s own feelings and behaviors that affect the therapeutic process.

2. Identify two ways that a reflective practice can help to advance clinical skills. III.B.3 – Acknowledge therapist’s bias and limitations in interpreting information (e.g. cultural differences, clinical orientation) II.A.1. g Recognizing and working with transference and countertransference dynamics

3. List two characteristics that are pre-requisites of reflection. IV.A.1 – Assess areas of professional growth and set goals.

4. Identify three qualities that are counterproductive to reflection II.A.1.b Develop a therapeutic relationship by being fully present and authentic; IV.A.1 – Assess areas of professional growth and set goals.

Schedule:

10 minutes - Introduction & overview
20 minutes - Presentation of models of reflective practice
30 minutes - Presentation of clinical case illustrations and reflective practice
10 minutes - Questions and discussion
10 minute - Break
35 minutes – Experiential exercise I and reflective process and discussion
30 minutes - Experiential exercise II and reflective process and discussion
15 minutes – Review, questions and evaluations
