Description

This course presents a framework of immigration trauma, discusses the acculturation theory, and examines how music therapy can assist immigrants with their acculturation process. Join us for a better understanding of immigrant clients and valuable insights into problems at hand.

 

Learner Objectives:

1. Participants will be able to identify the traumatic components of immigration experience within a context and in relation to a specific client case (BCD.I.B.4, d, k).

2. Participants will learn the basic theoretical concept of cultural psychology and adapt a developmental outlook on the acculturation process (BCD.IV.A.2).

3. Participants will engage in analysis of their own cultural background and how it affects their music therapy practice (BCD.III.B.3).

4. Participants will learn how the variety of clinical approaches can be employed to meet the complex acculturative needs of immigrants (BCD.II.A.4, b, d, e).

1. Opening and introductions --20 min

2. Overview (lecture)              --10 min // What we will learn: an overview of music therapy work with immigrants.

3. Experiential part I               --15 min // Participants analyze their own cultural background (Learning Objective #3).

4. Discussion                          --15 min // Reflecting on the experiential learning.
