Description

In order to practice both safely and effectively, music thearpists must understand the symptoms of individual and systemic trauma, and locate their clinical work accordingly as to avoid causing retraumatization and/or perpetuating oppression. Learn about the neurobiology of trauma and its symptoms, as well as the nature of systemic oppression as a form of trauma. Explore intentional cultivation of vicarious resilience for music therapists.

5 CMTE-credit course

This course is eligible for LCAT CE Contact Hours (the same number of CMTE credit hours specified above) for continuing education for Licensed Creative Arts Therapists (LCATs) in New York State. AMTA is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed creative arts therapists. #CAT-0055

Learning Objectives

Participants will demonstrate understanding of the impact of trauma on the brain and define at least 3 major symptoms of trauma. CBMT: I 5, 8, 10; II B 3e, 4l

Participants will demonstrate understanding of the principles of trauma-informed practice in music therapy and how they inform clinical thinking and treatment planning and implementation.  CBMT II D5, 9, III A 2 c, g, 3 a-g

Participants will explain how music therapy experiences can be utilized to promote empowerment as well as to redress power imbalances in the therapeutic relationship. CBMT II D 9

Participants will give one example of how vicarious resilience may be encouraged for music therapists. CBMT V B 12
