Joan A. Turkus, M.D., co-founder and consultant of The CENTER: Posttraumatic Disorders Program at the Psychiatric Institute of Washington, D.C., conducts a private practice in general and forensic psychiatry in McLean, Virginia. Dr. Turkus’ many years of experience in the trauma field have established her national profile as a pioneer and activist in education and consultation. Following her undergraduate training in pharmacy at Rutgers University, she graduated from The George Washington University School of Medicine and is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a Fellow of the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation. She is a recent Past President of ISSTD and has been given the Cornelia Wilbur award for clinical contributions and a Distinguished Achievement Award. Dr. Turkus is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and the American Board of Forensic Psychiatry. She is proficient in clinical hypnosis and EMDR and maintains a keen interest in the neurobiology and psychopharmacology of traumatic stress and dissociation. Her published writings include book chapters and articles on the treatment of Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Dissociative Disorders.
