Instructors: 

Heather A Stone PhD LCSW is the Director of Behavioral Health at Central Virginia Health Services (CVHS) where she has practiced clinically for eight years.  Prior to her tenure at CVHS, Dr. Stone practiced in the areas of in early childhood mental health, child welfare, and adult mental health in Illinois, Maryland, New York, and Alabama. Dr. Stone graduated with honors from the University of Hawaii in 1987, earned her MA in Social Service Administration from the University of Chicago in 1999, and her PhD from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2012. She has been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker since 2001. She is recognized by NASW-VA as a Certified Trauma Specialist. She is currently working on certification in EMDR. Dr. Stone was accepted as a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) in 2018.

Dr. Stone’s specific interests include implementation of evidence based practice for the evaluation and improvement of clinical practice. Dr. Stone has been instrumental in the adoption of evidence based practices at CVHS to include Integrated Care, Mental Health First Aid, Motivational Interviewing, and Trauma Informed Care.

Barbara Heistand LCSW CSAC is the Assistant Director for Behavioral Health Services at CVHS. She has practiced for the past three years at Caroline Family Practice in Bowling Green, VA.  Prior to joining CVHS, she had five years’ experience working in an integrated care setting at another FQHC. Ms. Heistand has a BA in psychology from Ohio Wesleyan University and her Masters in Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University.  She has been licensed as a Clinical Social Worker since 1994, is a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC), and is recognized by NASW-VA as a Certified Trauma Specialist. Ms. Heistand is currently working on certification in EMDR as well.

 

Ms. Heistand's specific interests within the field of integrated care include working with persons with substance use disorders, co-occurring disorders, and trauma.  At CVHS, she has been actively involved in training behavioral, medical, and dental providers in Motivational Interviewing.  

 

Morgan Honickel LCSW has been with CVHS for two years at Appomattox Area Health and Wellness Center in Petersburg, VA.  Prior to joining CVHS, she worked in behavioral health utilization management, an inpatient psychiatric hospital, and outpatient therapy, among other community-based behavioral health services. Ms. Honickel has a BA in psychology from Northeastern University and her Masters in Social Work from Rutgers University.  She has been licensed as a Clinical Social Worker since 2011 and is currently working on certification in EMDR as well.

Ms. Honickel's specific interests within the field of integrated care include working with children, adolescents, and families, specializing in mood disorders, anxiety, and trauma.  At CVHS, she has been actively involved in training behavioral, medical, and dental providers in Motivational Interviewing, Mental Health First Aid, and Trauma-Informed Care.

 

Deborah Vanderpool, MS, RDN, CSSD, CDE, is a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist, Certified Diabetes Educator, and a Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition from SUNY Plattsburgh and completed her dietetic internship and Master’s degree in Exercise Science from Syracuse University. Deb brings 25 years of experience and expertise in nutrition and fitness to her present position at Appomattox Health and Wellness Center with Central Virginia Health Services along with Adjunct Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University teaching Sports Nutrition.

Ms. Vanderpool's specific interests include working with eating disorders, sports medicine and diabetes care. She uses motivational interviewing daily in nutritional and diabetes counseling.
