Biographical Note

 

Stephen Grubb has been e-services and marketing manager at Broward County Library since 2011. His innovations included creative uses for technology, such as a “QR Quest,” which involved library users in a scannable scavenger hunt and the transformation of “Broward County Library” into “BCL WoW,” which stands for “Broward County Library Without Walls.” He was a member of the team that designed and launched the Creation Station makerspace at the Broward County Main Library. In 2014, he was named a Library Journal Mover and Shaker as a Change Agent.

The Fall of RadioShack and the Renaissance of the Public Library

 

After 94 years of business, the RadioShack Corporation recently filed for Chapter 11. RadioShack gave us one of the first personal computers and was a tinkerer’s paradise for young inventors such as Steve Wozniak who went on to found Apple computers. What factors led to the downfall of RadioShack and how are these factors lessons for public libraries? How are libraries changing to meet the changing demands of the public and to integrate emerging technologies into their services?
