CMTE G Technology Tips, Techniques, and Tools for your Music Therapy Practice

This fun session will demonstrate how technology developments have expanded pathways for the music therapist. Keyboards, iPads, equipment, apps (to name just a few) provide endless opportunities for music therapists working with people with autism, dementia, special needs, and more. Instruments, practical applications, hands-on demonstrations, and video examples will be included.

Learner Objectives:

Objective 1) Attendees will learn to use 3 or more instruments/equipment to meet treatment needs of their clients which can be adapted using non-music materials for the clients’ learning styles (I. D. 11,12).

Objective 2) Attendees will demonstrate at least 5 keyboard features or  techniques that enhance their functional keyboarding skills (II.A.5.i.2.).

Objective 3) Attendees will learn about current technology tools and materials on the market that can be adapted to meet their client’s needs and goals (II.A.5.w.).

Objective 4) Attendees will learn 3 or more technology devices or instruments that can enhance their professional and clinical skills with a variety of clients (IV.A.7.).


Overview and introductions (10 minutes)

Introduction to instruments (10 min)

Introduction to basic features (10 minutes)

(e.g. portable grand, voice, style, songs, lights, any key, waiting, follow the lights)

Case examples (10 minutes)

Hands on exploration of basic features (20 minutes)

Break 10 min

Introduction to intermediate features (20 minutes)

(styles, chord fingering system, improvisation, songwriting, adapted lessons, individual therapy sessions)

Therapeutic Case Examples (10 minutes)

Hands on exploration of intermediate features (20 minutes)

Meal Break 30 min

Introduction to group music making features and sing-a-long (20 minutes)

Case Examples (10 minutes)

Hands on exploration of group music making features (20 minutes)

Break 10 min

Resources and modifications (directions, visuals, books) (30 min)

iPad Apps/Other technology equipment (45 min)

Evaluations (15 minutes)
