CMTE M. Make Music From Anything: MakeyMakey & Making Your Own Creative Digital Instruments

Description

The MakeyMakey is a new and easy interface for any computer that provides the ability to make music out of almost anything and anyone.  This CMTE will be provide details on of the MakeyMakey as well as share clinical examples, applications, anecdotes and stories about this unique device. 

Objectives:

  • Obj. #1: Participants will understand how the MakeyMakey works, the basic principles behind completing a circuit, and identify types of materials that can be used (CBMT Domain II.A.5.a, e, & p; IV.A.7) (a) How to connect the MakeyMakey, find applications, websites, and other programs with which to use the MakeyMakey (b) Basic troubleshooting (Why isn’t it working when you want?)
  • Obj. #2: The attendee will learn how to create several adaptations using common objects, items, or instruments to best suit various abilities, clients, populations, and scenarios (CBMT Domain II, A.2.u; II.A.5.q; II.A.2)
  • Obj. #3: The attendee will learn and experience creating music individually and in groups using home-made instruments created during the workshop (CBMT Domain II.A.5.x)
  • Obj. #4: The attendee will identify other areas in which creating musical objects can benefit non-musical goals, and brainstorm or prototype possible ideas (CBMT Domain II.A.5.m, r, w, & ac)

Course Outline:
i) 5 min – Overview

ii) 10 min – Basic Circuits & the MakeyMakey (hardware)

iii) 10 min – Connecting and Using the MakeyMakey (software)
- Various computer programs and free websites

iv) 30 min – Designing and Making Conductive Objects (hardware + software)

--5 minute break--

v) 15 min – Scratch: Controlling What you Hear and See

vi) 20 min – Instructor’s Clinical Examples
(1) Identify When/If/Need
(2) Musical Applications
(a) Music Technology in therapy
(b) Music Technology as therapy

--5 minute break--

vii) 1 hr – Workshop (including role playing experientials)
(1) Small group breakout
(a) Identify “client” and/or “problem”
(b) Make creative hardware
(c) Use with software (preexisting or Scratch)
(2) Demonstrations
(a) Uses and Clients

viii) 10-15 min – Challenges, Questions, and Open Discussion        10 minutes - course evalutions
