CMTE J. Making the Transfer: Guitar & Percussion Techniques for Deepening the Clinical Groove

Description

This CMTE is designed to solidify a deeper sense of the importance of groove/”feel” within clinical practice. Valuable vocabulary and techniques for hand drum and guitar accompaniment within a variety of styles/genres will be provided to assist participants in moving toward greater musical competence. 

Objectives:

  • 1. Participants will increase their ability to create hand-drumming and guitar strumming grooves/“feels” that capture the style/genre for greater musical expression. CBMT Domain II. A. 5. i) 3,4; B. 6.
  • 2. Participants will increase functional skill sets on diverse hand drums and guitar (clarifying techniques for bass, tone, slap, strumming with constant flow of 8th notes,16th notes, swing feel, proper palm muting/The “Chuck” placement with regard torhythmic flow). CBMT Domain II. A. 5. i.) 3,4. B. 6.
  • 3. Participants will gain experience in listening to and translating drum-set patterns to hand drum grooves and guitar strumming groove patterns (8th notes, 16th notes, swing feel, i.e. up/down, up/down, up/down, up/down, etc.) while maintaining the underlying flow of rhythm. CBMT Domain II. A. 5. i) 3,4; B. 6.
  • 4. Participants will leave with increased skill sets to successfully hold rhythmic grounds to facilitate powerful music-making in both clinical and community music-making environments. CBMT Domain II. A. 5. i) 3,4; B. 6.

Schedule:

  • 7:30am 50 minutes introduction and overview to bass, tone, and slap hand drumming technique, implementation of hand drum vocabulary to groove patterns.
  • 8:20 am 10 minute break
  • 8:30am 50 minutes review of previous material and break out sessions for more advanced techniques and patterns,
  • 9:20 am 10 minute break
  • 9:30am  - 50 minutes -drum set experiential, and advanced techniques/patterns break out sessions as needed 
  • 10:20 am 10 minute break
  • 10:30 am 50 minute introduction to guitar transfer techniques
  • 11:30am 50 minute implementation of transfer rhythms to guitar technique, repertoire building with techniques previously learned, review and wrap up with questions and discussion
  • 12:20 am 10 minute period for filling out evaluation forms
